Every new development or growth in child’s body is a proud and exciting moment for parents. Thus a baby’s first tooth is also a development that parents wait with anticipation. However with a certain percentage of children, tooth eruption gets delayed and this causes parents to worry a little. So when teeth do not appear, it is normal to wonder if there is something wrong. While getting worried is a natural reaction, in case of most of the kids delayed tooth eruption is something that needs not to worry about immediately.

Normal Growth of Teeth – The babies are generally born with most of their teeth already formed within their gums which usually begin to appear when the child approaches the age of six months. However there is also a possibility that tooth may appear within the first three months of their birth. While in some cases tooth may appear within three months, it is completely normal if your baby develops after a period of six months as they can have their first teeth till the age of 12 months or 01 year. So in order to have your baby develop natural teeth, you should wait for 12 months and should not worry before that.
Abnormal Growth – Young toddlers who fail to develop teeth by the age of 18 months are the ones who are at a greater risk of developing dental complications later. So in case your kid is having delayed tooth eruption, it is advisable that he/she be taken to the dental expert. Since the age of 4 to 15 month is the normal range for the appearance of the first tooth, it is a worrying sign if your child has not developed his first tooth beyond to this point. While majority of babies develop around 08 teeth by the end of 18 month, having no teeth at all to this point should be considered an alarming sign and dental expertise should be availed to get the baby proper care and medical attention.
Causes of delayed tooth eruption – When tooth eruption in the child is delayed to a certain age, there are number of factors that are responsible for it. Sometimes tooth eruption relates to hereditary appeal trait which causes the delay in formation of tooth. Additionally, babies with low birth weight also suffer from the problem of delayed tooth arrival. Nutritional deficiency and Vitamin D-resistant rickets could also one of the underlying causes of delayed tooth eruption among babies.
Conclusion – Although delayed tooth eruption in toddlers is a common problem among babies, it does not result much serious problem later on. While primary teeth help babies eat food quite well, delayed eruption results in added responsibility for parents and they are required to keep the gums hygiene so that eruption can take place as soon as possible.
